ARTIST: Pippi Johnson

The six months of stark winter in Lake of the Woods, Canada has led me to choose colour as my primary theme. I see vibrant hues where others see grays and browns. Seeking always the unusual, I do not paint light falling on objects, but rather light floating and flashing…moving through the space with great energy. The color itself is really the object in the painting. I have spent every summer of my adult life on Treaty Island, Lake of the Woods. Our wooden house is surrounded by trees three times its height. I work outside on the deck, alone with no ceiling and no walls. I am surrounded by flowers, tall trees, a lake, all varieties of wildlife and a creek. Each year when I return to Treaty Island, nature surrounds me, sighing, creaking, and singing with the winds.. Endless topic for painting!

ARTIST: Bob Thiessen
ARTWORK: A Bridge in Holland (photograph)

Photography has given me all the motivation I need to travel to distant places. Through photography I soak up the culture of each village, town, city, and country I visit. I do not travel as a tourist watching events pass me by. Rather, I travel as a photographer, always in pursuit of the next picture.

Self taught, I specialize in street and sport photography. Both require a keen eye to see what is exactly developing around me and react accordingly. Often there is only a split second to see the picture and get the shot. Dycom Photography: 786-6245 bobt@dycom.com

ARTIST: Jerry Bone
ARTWORK: Ontario, Quebec

Jerry was born in Moncton, New Brunswick and now resides in Winnipeg. In 1978, a friend persuaded Jerry to use his Abstract-Surreal-Op Fusion form of painting to make canvases which infuse prairie space into the Canadian landscape. So for 10 years, Jerry travelled across Canada and selected a single view from each province which he considered best exemplified it. The originals are rendered in oils. From this series Jerry has donated limited edition prints of Ontario – the north shore of lake Superior near Rossport looking south and of Quebec – southern townships looking east towards Lake Memphremagog.

ARTIST: Sandi Caputo

Sandi began oil painting under the direction of Joyce Anderson, later, taking classes in drawing, oil painting, watercolor, mono type printmaking through the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Martha Street Print Studio and a series of mono-printmaking classes in Alberta at the Red Deer Community College.

Though her first love was finely detailed oil painting, her new love is mono print making where the artistic freedom and creativity is endless. She will often rework back into the piece with watercolor, ink, or pastel, making each piece a unique reflection of the entanglements of life. Her artwork is held in both public and private collections across Canada. Fleet Gallery, 65 Albert Street, will be hosting her next show, running Nov. 15 – 30, 2009. Her work may also be seen at the Fusion Grill. sandicaputo@hotmail.com

Wendy was born and raised in Flin Flon. After raising three daughters and residing in various parts of Canada as well as a four years in Australia, she has now settled in Winnipeg. After undergoing several eye surgeries, she utilized the recovery periods to enhance skills previously obtained through self learning as well as water color courses in Ontario, Australia and Winnipeg. Currently, Wendy’s works can be found at the Wayne Arthur Gallery and McNally-Robinson Book Stores in Winnipeg, as well as Ormistons Florists and The Orange Toad Book Store in Flin Flon. Of course, Wendy is always happy to welcome interested guests to her home to view her work. Many of Wendy’s paintings reflect her love for the rugged beauty of northern Manitoba.

ARTIST: Ava Peters
ARTWORK: absolute (left), Red River on Princess

The emphasis of my work in previous summers was to work from Winnipeg locations in North River Heights and the Exchange District. Both areas of the city interest me: the small quaint houses of North River Heights were whimisical and had an element of a storybook setting. The Exchange District interested me with its limestone warehouses that are being gentrified. I have also worked on commision paintings in watercolour for clients, taking my own digital photo refrences to work from, although I do also work onsite. I like to capture the client’s house in the peak of the season when the garden in front is in full bloom.

ARTIST: Jo-Anne Kelly

Jo-Anne Kelly, a native of Manitoba, received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Manitoba and studied further courses in ceramics and printmaking at the Ontario College of Art. Jo’Anne has worked professionally in a number of different media. Nowadays she works in both clay and surface design, (primarily painting on silk) but also has had considerable experience in metal-smithing. She has also illustrated children’s books for Hyperion Press of New York.

Jo’Anne has dyed and painted costumes for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and has produced a wide range of hand painted silk pieces. Her paintings on silk range in subject matter from dappled landscapes to mythic themes.

Jo’Anne’s work in clay emphasizes the delicacy of thin-walled pieces. Her porcelain celebrates translucency and subtle colouration, achieved through multiple firings of several layers of glaze, under- and over-glazes, lustres and precious metal highlights. Often her pieces include the whimsical and mythic. Lately, Jo’Anne has begun to return to a former interest: jewellery making, utilizing silver and precious gemstones. j.kelly@shaw.ca www.kellyartobjects.com

ARTIST: Sandy Tapper of Bumblebee Baubles

Bumblebee Baubles is a relatively new business owned and operated by Sandy Tapper in Winnipeg.
